Complex Power Projects Need More Than Great Technology
I recently celebrated my 15th anniversary with SMA, which gave me a reason to think about how much has changed since I joined the company.
The projects we’re working on today look very different from the ones we worked on 15 years ago. They’re larger, more complex, and the expectations placed by grid operators and ISO’s for grid support and management have grown with them.
What’s changed just as much is the depth of expertise, we’ve built in-house. Over the years we’ve added specialists across grid modeling and integration, application engineering, power plant controls, products and solutions, advanced engineering services, commissioning and long-term support. That means our teams aren’t working on individual pieces of a project in isolation. They’re talking to each other, solving problems together and looking at the system as a whole.
That matters most on data center projects.
These are complex power projects moving on aggressive timelines. When something changes, customers need to get the right people into the conversation fast, without spending time figuring out which vendor owns which part of the problem or relaying information between technical teams. At SMA, we bring those people to the same table from the start.
Data center projects put real pressure on the electrical infrastructure behind them, and developers have to weigh grid requirements, system stability, equipment performance, controls and long-term operation together, since each affects the others. One of the most important decisions a customer makes isn’t just which technology to use. It’s who they trust to put those pieces together.
One team from the beginning
Long before equipment arrives on site, decisions get made that affect how a project performs for years: how the system should be sized, what the interconnection requirements are, how the system will respond to changing grid conditions, how the controls should interact with the hardware, what commissioning and long-term service support will be required. On a project as large as a data center, those questions can’t be answered independently.
When different companies own different pieces of the system, information must move between organizations, contracts and technical teams. Every handoff is a place where context gets lost or a problem takes longer to resolve.
SMA works differently. Our specialists work together from the earliest stages of a project, so the people who understand the equipment are in the same conversation as the people responsible for grid integration, controls and system performance. If a grid study turns up something that affects the system design, that doesn’t have to travel through several companies before it reaches the right engineer. Our teams work through it together. All of these capabilities under one company becomes more valuable as projects grow larger and timelines get tighter.
Accountability shouldn’t end at commissioning
A data center is expected to operate for decades, and the power infrastructure supporting it needs the same long-term view. The people designing and commissioning a system should understand how it will be monitored, supported and serviced once it’s running. When something changes years later, customers shouldn’t have to reconstruct which company was responsible for which part of the original project.
SMA stays involved through that full lifecycle, from early engineering and system design through commissioning, digital services and post-sales support. That’s a level of continuity that’s hard to replicate when responsibilities are spread across multiple vendors.
The value is in how the pieces work together
Data center power infrastructure is moving fast, and the technology will keep evolving. But the real differentiator is understanding the complete power system, which takes expertise across disciplines and, just as important, the ability for those experts to work together.
We built that capability at SMA on purpose. As our customers take on larger, more complex projects, having those specialists under one roof lets us solve problems together, make decisions with a full picture of the system, and give customers one clear point of accountability for the life of their project.
