SMA Training Sessions

Commercial Repowering Playbook: How Installers Build a Profitable Repowering Practice

Date: Tuesday, March 17, 2026 Time: 4:30–6 p.m. Room: S201A/B Contributors: Hasan Taylor, Kenny Allard, Tanya Layfield, Brandon Davis and Mike Mahon

Commercial solar systems installed eight to 15 years ago are aging out. Inverters are approaching end of life, replacement parts are harder to source, warranties have expired and performance problems are generating more service calls.

This session covers how installers can approach repowering as a structured scope of work rather than a series of one-off fixes. The discussion includes how to build the business infrastructure around repowering, scope projects accurately, manage technical constraints and price work to protect margins.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to identify repowering candidates using system age, inverter condition and performance data
  • Technical considerations when retrofitting legacy commercial systems
  • Scoping and pricing approaches that account for uncertainty and protect margin
  • Team roles across assessment, engineering support and installation
  • Customer communication strategies that reduce change orders and set clear expectations

Residential Repowering Playbook: Build a Profitable Repowering Business, Step by Step

Date: Wednesday, March 18, 2026 Time: 9–10:30 a.m. Room: S201A/B Contributors: Gabriela Lopez, Tanya Layfield, Brandon Davis and Mike Mahon

Residential systems installed 10 to 15 years ago are beginning to fail at scale. Inverters are reaching end of life, warranties are expiring and homeowners are losing significant production with no clear path to support.

For skilled installers, that represents a growing service and business opportunity.

This 90-minute, NABCEP-certified session focuses on turning residential repowering into a repeatable business. The training walks through how to identify opportunities, retrofit legacy systems correctly, price work appropriately and structure teams so repowering can scale.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to identify and qualify repowering opportunities using system age, inverter brand and production loss
  • Technical requirements for retrofitting legacy systems with Sunny Boy and battery-ready solutions
  • Team roles across lead generation, site assessment, sales, permitting and installation
  • Customer communication approaches when the original installer is no longer in business

Meet the Team

SMA will have one of its larger presences at the show in recent years. Applications engineers, territory sales managers and product managers supporting both residential and commercial solutions will be on site and available for meetings and conversations on the show floor.

If you have questions about repowering, residential storage or commercial rooftop systems, this is a good opportunity to connect directly with the people who can help.

Explore Milwaukee

If you have time outside the conference, Milwaukee has plenty to offer.

The Historic Third Ward, just south of downtown, is the city’s arts and dining district, with locally owned restaurants, galleries and boutiques set inside preserved warehouse buildings. The Milwaukee Public Market anchors the neighborhood and is a practical stop for coffee or a quick bite between sessions. The RiverWalk runs along the Milwaukee River through the Third Ward and connects easily to the rest of downtown.

For a longer excursion, the Harley-Davidson Museum is a short drive from the Baird Center, and the city has a well-established brewery scene worth exploring if you are staying an extra evening.
