How AR, VR and AI Are Shaping the Future of Utility-Scale Technical Training

At SMA America, we’re always looking for new ways to help technicians build the skills and confidence they need to safely service the equipment that powers today’s energy infrastructure.

Our utility-scale technical training has always emphasized hands-on learning. Using actual SMA utility inverters, switchgear and transformers, technicians learn how to safely troubleshoot systems, replace components and perform preventative maintenance while following proper safety procedures. That real-world experience remains the foundation of our training programs.

But as the energy industry evolves, so do the technologies that support learning. That’s why two members of our technical training team recently attended the AWE I, Spatial conference in Long Beach, California, where leaders in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) showcased the latest innovations transforming workforce training.

To say that we came away inspired by the possibilities, would be an understatement.

Immersive Experience

One of the biggest takeaways was seeing how immersive AR and VR technologies can complement traditional hands-on instruction. These tools make it possible to create highly detailed, interactive 3D models of utility-scale energy equipment, giving technicians a new way to explore complex systems before ever stepping into the field.

Imagine being able to virtually inspect the inside of an inverter, see how components fit together or practice maintenance procedures on equipment that would otherwise be energized or located hundreds of miles away. These immersive experiences provide a safe environment where technicians can become familiar with equipment, build confidence and reinforce critical procedures before working on live systems.

Accessibility

For customers with geographically dispersed teams, this also opens the door to more accessible training opportunities. Whether preparing new technicians, refreshing existing skills or introducing new products, digital learning experiences can help reduce travel while expanding access to high-quality technical education.

The Future is 3D

Another exciting area we explored was advanced 3D scanning technology. These solutions allow us to capture detailed digital representations of equipment and transform them into interactive learning content. Combined with new software publishing platforms, they create opportunities to deliver engaging training experiences that are both realistic and easy to access.

While nothing replaces the value of working directly with equipment under the guidance of experienced instructors, these emerging technologies have tremendous potential to enhance our existing programs. They allow us to extend learning beyond the classroom while maintaining the high standards of safety and technical excellence that customers expect from SMA America.

Innovation has always been at the heart of SMA, from developing industry-leading power conversion technology to investing in the people who keep these systems operating reliably. As we continue exploring AR, VR and AI, we’re excited about how these tools can make technical training more engaging, more accessible and even safer for technicians around the world.
