SolarCoin migrates to the Energy Web Foundation: What you need to bear in mind following the migration of the SolarCoins

SolarCoin goes EnergyWebFoundation

More than 17,000 PV systems in the Sunny Portal are benefiting from the advantages of a blockchain that is established in the market. For users, the move to the blockchain of the EnergyWebFoundation has given rise to numerous error messages and questions during the transitional period. In the meantime, all technical adjustments in the Sunny Portal have been implemented.

What the migration means

The migration of the SolarCoins to the blockchain of the Energy Web Foundation was completed early in the summer of 2021. The Energy Web Foundation uses a powerful technology (Ethereum, ERC20), thus enabling the use of standard tooling. The new blockchain is working very resource-friendly as it is using the “Proof of Authority” process that needs only a few specially authorized nodes for the necessary consensus algorithm.

How to use your SolarCoins now

Users who previously had not specified a “wallet ID” (i.e., the “account number” for your cryptocurrency), do not need to take any further action. You can check your account balance anytime.

When you wish to access the SolarCoins, an appropriate electronic “wallet” needs to be created and the corresponding ID must be entered in the portal. The functions required for this are still being coordinated and tested with the SolarCoin Foundation.

Anybody who already had a wallet in the “old” SolarCoin blockchain had to go through the migration process described here. There are no changes in the Sunny Portal necessary. Even if the “old” wallet is still displayed here in some cases, there is no need to worry: The “correct” new wallet will also be used in this case.

As a result of the migration, “transfers” were also delayed during the transition period. Furthermore, the “account balances” were not displayed in the Sunny Portal in some cases. Now these limitations no longer occur. The SolarCoin Foundation will now notify you when a transfer has taken place.

 Your most frequent error messages

Understandably, many users were unsettled in the unavoidable transitional phase due to the error messages displayed. With the following messages you got back to us during the last weeks most frequently:

  1. Sending error: This error message was caused exclusively by the changeover and should no longer appear.
  2. InternalServerError: We were able to resolve this error description directly with our contact persons at the SolarCoin Foundation. The SolarCoin Foundation has made the necessary corrections.
  3. Validation Error: In this case, the reason are interface problems between the systems at SMA and the SolarCoin Foundation. We are working on a common solution and will inform you soon.
  4. Wallet-ID: This error message was also down to the changeover and was caused by a change in the format of the wallet ID. Please note: If the “old” wallet ID is still being displayed but you can see the correct account balance, there is no need to make a change. The display will be changed within the scope of other adjustments and should show the correct ID soon.

Important note:

Following the necessary changes and adjustments, error messages appear for a small number of systems that can only be resolved through manual intervention in the databases. In these cases, we ask you to be patient for a little while – together with the SolarCoin Foundation we are working on a solution!

What is SolarCoin?

SolarCoin is a blockchain-based cryptocurrency. It was developed in 2014 to accelerate the energy transition. Similar to the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, for example, the SolarCoin network has a global and decentralised structure. Plant operators receive one SolarCoin (SLR) from the SolarCoin Foundation for each megawatt hour (MWh) of solar energy generated.

Do you also want to collect SolarCoins with your PV-system?

If you have registered one or more PV systems with a system output of up to 150 kWp in Sunny Portal, log in to Sunny Portal with your e-mail address and password. In order to activate your system for SolarCoin, you need admin rights for your system. If you do not yet have these, please contact your installer or a SMA Solar Partner.

I succeeded in creating a new ERC20 SLR address, and could enter it in SunnyPortal. I can even see the balance. But how can I proceed for selling these SLR coins? I tried in Metamask with the correct chain, but cannot see any balance of SLR coins there.

      Hello Bart,

Maybe you have not yet switched Metamask to the EWC (“Energy Web Chain) and therefore only see the Ethereum blockchain. Since the SolarCoins are managed on the EWC, they are only visible there.

      Sunny regards

      Hello Patricio,

Information about autoclaim can be found here.
Unfortunately, there is no direct support for SolarCoins with ennexOS.

      Sunny regards
