Shortcut: Properly Wiring the SMA Home Storage

Whether it’s installation, commissioning, or a service call: This shortcut provides helpful tips from our service experts, identifies common sources of error, and offers simple solutions to ensure a smooth on-site experience. This shortcut shows you how to avoid common installation errors with the SMA Home Storage battery and how to identify the most frequent causes of startup problems even before commissioning.

When installing the SMA Home Storage battery, problems occasionally arise with crimping or DC wiring. The result: The battery does not start correctly, or operation is interrupted.

The SMA Home Storage is a modular battery solution for home energy systems. The lithium iron phosphate battery enables high charging currents and is designed for particularly intensive use. It is compatible with SMA hybrid inverters and can be expanded in the range from 3.2 kWh to 16.4 kWh.

Typical symptoms

  • When connecting the battery, charging does not start, and the voltage in the instantaneous values drops well below the expected voltage. Several relay switching operations can be heard beforehand.
  • Battery charging is not starting.
  • The system stops during the startup process.
  • In the instantaneous values, the battery voltage deviates from the sum of the cell voltages or briefly drops to 0 V.

Frequent causes

  • Metal contact in the MC4 connector not fully engaged
  • Faulty crimping of the DC lines
  • Strain relief not correctly mounted
  • Battery modules inadvertently connected in parallel instead of in series

Important Safety Notice

Work on electrical devices and components of a photovoltaic (PV) system must only be carried out by qualified electricians.

Improper work may result in property damage as well as serious or fatal injuries caused by electric shock, arc flash, or fire. Observe the applicable safety regulations as well as the instructions provided in the respective device and system documentation.

How to

Check all crimp connections visually and mechanically prior to commissioning and ensure that all contacts are fully engaged.

When submitting service requests via the Online Service Center, photos of the DC power cables and plug connections help identify the cause of error more quickly.

Additional tip

If several battery towers are installed (e.g. 2 + 2 modules), the battery modules must be connected in series. An inadvertent parallel connection causes the displayed battery voltage to be only about half of the setpoint.
