As developers and EPCs work to secure projects under Safe Harbor, the difference between staying on schedule and missing critical deadlines often comes down to one factor: supply. While some inverter manufacturers are facing challenges that leave inventory scarce, SMA America and its distribution partners entered this season prepared.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt RE+ we heard again and again that having\u00a0product\u00a0immediately available is what allows customers to stay on track and meet their Safe Harbor goals,\u201d said Brandon Davis, director of distribution sales at SMA America. \u201cKnowing how critical this is, we made sure our distribution partners are stocked and ready.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Safe Harbor provisions allow solar developers to qualify for the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) if specific criteria are met, even if the project is not completed until later. For projects under 1.5 Megawatts (MW), developers can either begin physical work or incur at least 5% of total project costs before the applicable deadline to\u00a0establish\u00a0eligibility. They must also\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0\u201ccontinuous progress\u201d toward completion, typically by placing the project in service within four years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Projects over 1.5\u00a0MW\u00a0face stricter requirements\u00a0of \u201cphysical work of a significant nature\u201d\u00a0and can no longer rely solely on the 5% cost threshold.\u00a0A lack of product supply\u00a0can\u00a0impact\u00a0the project\u2019s eligibility for the ITC if\u00a0it\u00a0impedes the four-year \u201ccontinuity\u00a0safe\u00a0harbor\u201d that allows the project to qualify if placed in service within four years of starting construction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In both scenarios, having equipment available to meet a project\u2019s timeline is\u00a0key to\u00a0helping\u00a0achieve\u00a0the financial\u00a0benefits tied to ITC eligibility, which depend heavily on meeting procurement and construction deadlines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
