In the event of a house fire, firefighters need to be able to rapidly de-energize these circuits for everyone\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sunspec.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SunSpec Alliance<\/a>, whose stated objective is to make \u201cplug-and-play communication for distributed energy,\u201d has developed a communication protocol for module-level rapid shutdown \u2013 emphasizing low cost and time savings while enhancing the overall health and safety of solar power systems. More than 30 companies actively contributed to the development of this particular standard, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ti.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas Instruments<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because Texas Instruments engineers participated in the Sunspec working group that developed the Rapid Shutdown protocol specification, I recently participated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/webinars\/webinar\/how-standardization-is-driving-down-costs-and-improving-safety-for-201#gs.sZvNv3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">webinar<\/a> with solar industry leaders from across the globe to show how standardization fostered by the SunSpec Alliance is improving safety and driving down costs.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ti.com\/solution\/solar_energy_rapid_shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rapid shutdown application page <\/a>and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ti.com\/tool\/TIDA-060001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SunSpec Rapid Shutdown Transmit and Receive Reference Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Sunspec Alliance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The SunSpec Alliance is a well-respected, international trade group of developers, manufacturers, and service providers whose mission is to accelerate the growth of the distributed energy industry and expand the market for renewable power. To date, the SunSpec Alliance has successfully introduced dozens of information and communication standards that have been adopted industry-wide.
