With such storm potential and the history of grid outages they&#8217;ve caused, solar-curious customers are increasingly interested in backup power.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Given the high cost of entry into the world of grid-tied battery backup systems, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ion-solar.com\/\">Ion Solar<\/a> of Tulsa, OK, saw an opportunity for their customers to experience backup power through the <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/fF461YYNbtw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Secure Power Supply<\/a> (SPS) feature of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/products\/solarinverters\/sunny-boy-3000tl-us-3800tl-us-4000tl-us-5000tl-us-6000tl-us-7000tl-us-7700tl-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunny Boy TL-US<\/a> inverter.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Opportunity power comes knocking<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_3896.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7131 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_3896.jpg\" alt=\"Ion Solar - Sunny Boy TL-US with SPS\" width=\"262\" height=\"349\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/349;\" \/><\/a>Since the homeowner\u2019s roof wasn\u2019t large enough or ideally oriented, the Ion Solar team designed a robust, ground-mount system to withstand high winds with an optimal orientation. The 9.5 kW system is creating power from 36 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarworld-usa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SolarWorld<\/a> 270-watt monocrystalline modules, fed into a Sunny Boy 6000TL-US and 3000TL-US, each with SPS functionality at the ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our extreme weather, our customers saw the value of SPS,\u201d said Seth Christ of Ion Solar. \u201cThe system is designed such that if they need more backup capabilities down the road, we can add a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/products\/battery-inverters\/sunny-island-4548-us-6048-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunny Island<\/a> and a battery bank when the time comes. That\u2019s a great future opportunity to work with existing customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>More than enough power<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>At the homeowner\u2019s current rate of consumption, the system will provide 130 percent of their demands. Extra power sold back to the local utility will help speed up the payback period for the system and allow for future demand growth, should the need arise.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a desire to be energy-neutral for financial savings, the homeowner felt a strong desire to install solar to be more socially and environmentally responsible.
