Micro grids are also scalable, with the ability to service a single customer in a remote location, a load center such as a hospital, or an entire community with diverse supply needs. PowerStream, one of the first utilities of its size in North America to initiate a proof-of-concept trial involving this technology, is using its demonstration project to evaluate a micro grid\u2019s performance while connected to and disconnected from the power grid.<\/p>\n<h5><b>Project Details<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>PowerStream\u2019s micro grid demonstration project includes a 17 kW solar array, comprising 81 <a href=\"http:\/\/us.sunpowercorp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SunPower<\/a> 210W\u00a0 solar modules on dual axis trackers, three <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/en_US\/products\/grid-tied-inverters\/sunny-boy\/sunny-boy-5000-us-6000-us-7000-us-8000-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMA Sunny Boy 6000-US<\/a> inverters and three <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/en_US\/products\/off-grid-inverters\/sunny-island-4548-us-6048-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMA Sunny Island 6048-US<\/a> off-grid solar inverters. Additional power sources include a 1.8 kW downwind turbine by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southwest WindPower<\/a> and a 35 kW <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caterpillar.com\/brands\/olympian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caterpillar Olympian<\/a> natural gas generator, as well as a battery bank with a 23 kWh <a href=\"http:\/\/rollsbattery.com\/products\/17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Surrette<\/a> lead acid battery, 5 kWh <a href=\"http:\/\/en.calb.cn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China Aviation<\/a> lithium ion battery and 12 kWh <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geenergystorage.com\/technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Electric<\/a> sodium nickel chloride battery. The micro grid provides power for several loads at PowerStream\u2019s main office building, including lighting, air conditioning and refrigeration, as well as for an electric vehicle charging station.<\/p>\n<h5><b>Micro Grids: Power of the Future<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>PowerStream believes that micro grids will be an integral part of Ontario\u2019s energy future, not only changing the way electricity is distributed, but also in providing an innovative solution to the challenge of asset renewal in large-scale electricity delivery systems and demonstrating how renewable energy can effectively help to address the growing demand for electricity.<\/p>\n<p>According to PowerStream, as micro grid technology becomes more prevalent, these systems will improve the security of the larger electricity grid at a local or even regional level by helping to support the grid during major power failures.
