However, the array\u2019s exceptional design, which was not without its challenges, made it a shoe-in for the 2013 Project of the Year Award (Structures Less than $5 Million) from the <a href=\"http:\/\/apwa.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Public Works Association (APWA)<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.apwa.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Metro Chapter<\/a> and has since been nominated for an APWA national award.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6176\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Inverters3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6176\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6176 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Inverters3.jpg\" alt=\"SMA Sunny Boy inverters were selected for the project because they gave Solar Service Inc. the ability to install the inverters in a controlled environment.\" width=\"262\" height=\"148\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/148;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SMA Sunny Boy inverters were selected for the project because they gave Solar Service Inc. the ability to install the inverters in a controlled environment.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><b>Project Details<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>The 99.5-kW PV system, one of the largest municipality-owned solar arrays in Illinois, is located on the sixth floor of the Avenue Parking Garage, providing power throughout the facility and its electric vehicle charging stations. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarserviceinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solar Service Inc.<\/a>, based in Niles, Ill., designed and installed the system, which comprises 390 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarworld-usa.com\/products-and-services\/sunmodule-solar-panels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SolarWorld SW255 Mono modules<\/a> and 12 SMA inverters (six <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/en_US\/products\/grid-tied-inverters\/sunny-boy\/sunny-boy-5000-us-6000-us-7000-us-8000-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunny Boy 6000-US<\/a> and six <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/en_US\/products\/grid-tied-inverters\/sunny-boy\/sunny-boy-5000-us-6000-us-7000-us-8000-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunny Boy 8000-US<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>SMA Sunny Boy inverters were selected over a single central inverter to allow for ease of installation and maintenance and providing monitoring granularity. \u201cFor commercial system designs, I always prefer multiple inverters so performance can be compared and production issues easily assessed via remote or onsite monitoring,\u201d said Garrison Riegel, system designer and project manager for Solar Service. \u201cThe decentralized design provides improved energy harvest and by using string inverters we maximized cost-effectiveness and long-term system reliability. We chose SMA Sunny Boys for this project specifically because they have proven to be one of the most reliable string inverters available.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6177\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Avenue-Garage-087.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6177\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6177 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Avenue-Garage-087.jpg\" alt=\"A city view of downtown Chicago, Ill. can be seen from the top of the parking structure. \" width=\"262\" height=\"196\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/196;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A city view of downtown Chicago, Ill. can be seen from the top of the parking structure.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><b>Safety and Structure<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>The main challenge was creating a PV system design that would maximize performance and longevity, but not compromise the integrity of the existing parking garage structure. The safety of the general public and protecting the racking from damage were also primary design factors.\u00a0While these considerations are similar for all installations, this project posed certain challenges seen in areas prone to harsh winters, such as protecting the racking\u2019s support posts from possible snowplow damage.<\/p>\n<p>To combat some of these issues, pole mounts and cantilevered carport-type racking systems were initially considered. However, \u201cthe reaction to the environmental stresses placed on these types of rack designs would have compromised the garage\u2019s structural integrity unless we made significant structural reinforcements,\u201d said Mark Tryon of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.larsonengr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larson Engineering<\/a>, who worked on the project. In the end, a canopy racking system design with a custom galvanized steel frame and <a href=\"http:\/\/ironridge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IronRidge XRS rails<\/a> was chosen, thereby eliminating the need for structural reinforcement of the garage.<\/p>\n<h5><b>Award-Winning Design<\/b><\/h5>\n<div id=\"attachment_6178\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Avenue-Garage-309.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6178\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6178 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Avenue-Garage-309.jpg\" alt=\"Every detail of design was considered for the PV array, including the matching slope and concealed posts. \" width=\"262\" height=\"173\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/173;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Every detail of design was considered for the PV array, including the matching slope and concealed posts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Blending seamlessly into the aesthetic and function of the parking garage was important for the system\u2019s final design. To keep its upright posts away from vehicles and snow plows, the 50-ton steel racking system was anchored to the parking garage\u2019s elevated support columns. The array was installed at a single slope&#8211;at a similar angle to the adjacent garage ramp\u2014with two gaps that allow for expansion and contraction of the aluminum rails, as well as access points for maintenance and cleaning as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the system has been commissioned, it has exceeded the initial energy estimations by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/rredc\/pvwatts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Renewable Energy Laboratory\u2019s PVWatts\u2122 calculator<\/a> by as much as 25 percent and is expected to produce about 110,000 kWh annually, earning it rave review from city officials and possibly even a few more awards in the future.<\/p>\n<p><i>Solar Spotlight aims to highlight SMA inverters in real-world situations.
