The Massachusetts family-run business, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkshireeast.com\/\">Berkshire East<\/a>, can now claim the rights to owning the first ski resort that runs on 100 percent on-site renewable energy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-size: 0.83em;\">About Berkshire East<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Berkshire East is located on Mt. Institute in the small town of Charlemont, Massachusetts.\u00a0 In the charming town of 1,266 residents, the ski resort hosts more than 100,000 skiers annually, and has six ski lifts and two lodges. The year-round resort also caters to thrill seekers in the warm summer months, offering one of the longest zip line canopy tours in the United States.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3907\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire-Turbine-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3907\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3907\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3907 lazyload\" title=\"Berkshire East Wind Turbine \" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sma-sunny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire-Turbine-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"174\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/174;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solar and wind are combined to provide enough energy to power the entire ski resort.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><span style=\"font-size: 0.83em;\">In Tandem: Solar and W<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.83em;\">i<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.83em;\">nd<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>The recently commissioned 500 kW solar farm was developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/sed-net.com\/\">Sustainable Energy Developments Inc<\/a>. SED installed 90 dual-axis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allearthrenewables.com\/products\/solar\/\">AllSun Trackers<\/a> manufactured by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allearthrenewables.com\/\">AllEarth Renewables<\/a>. The dual-<br \/>\naxis trackers combine GPS and wireless technology to position more than 2,000 solar panels towards the sun throughout the day. Each AllSun Tracker is paired with an SMA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/en_US\/products\/grid-tied-inverters\/sunny-boy\/sunny-boy-5000-us-6000-us-7000-us-8000-us.html\">Sunny Boy 6000-US<\/a>\u00a0inverter for maximized energy production. Despite the harsh winter conditions, the solar farm is expected to produce 700,000 kWh annually.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">The solar farm accompanies a 900 kW wind turbine that the company installed in 2011. The 277-foot tall wind turbine, manufactured by <\/span>PowerWind<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">, has 91 foot-long blades and can spin up to 27 rotations per minute. Concerns over climate change and energy price increases are making many ski resorts look at renewables as an investment for the longevity of their businesses.
