A well-known fact about PV arrays is that as temperature rises, system voltage drops and can fall dangerously close to the lower edge of the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) window.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As heat raises in extreme environments and voltage subsequently drops, inverters must adjust the maximum power point (MPP) they track to account for the change on the IV curve. A justified concern is that this could cause an inverter\u2019s MPP to drop below the lower MPPT voltage window and the inverter would disconnect and stop producing power.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Avoiding the issue<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Sunny Boy inverters are able to manipulate the PV array\u2019s voltage to maintain an MPP slightly higher than the lower MPPT voltage window by reducing the array\u2019s current. The inverter will continue to do this until it can no longer keep the power above its preset minimum power (Pmin) threshold, which typically happens during sunset.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Pmin for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sma-america.com\/en_US\/products\/grid-tied-inverters\/sunny-boy\/sunny-boy-6000tl-us-7000tl-us-8000tl-us-9000tl-us-10000tl-us-11000tl-us.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sunny Boy 10000TL-US<\/a> is 700W. The inverter, chosen because of its high efficiency yet comparably narrow voltage window, will continue to reduce the array\u2019s current to keep the voltage above the lower MPPT value (300VDC on a 208V service) until the AC power reaches 700W, then the inverter will disconnect from the grid, go to sleep and start again the next day.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div id=\"attachment_6597\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smainverted.com\/files\/2014\/06\/image-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6597\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6597 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.smainverted.com\/files\/2014\/06\/image-1-262x160.png\" alt=\"Figure 1, click to enlarge.\" width=\"262\" height=\"160\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/160;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1, click to enlarge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Using the Solar Academy\u2019s TerraSAS simulator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smainverted.com\/2014\/02\/11\/measure-this-a-look-inside-the-solar-academys-pv-simulator\/\" target=\"_blank\">which we\u2019ve previously discussed<\/a>, we can observe the behavior of SMA\u2019s Optitrack MPPT in action the Sunny Boy 10000TL-US connected to our 208V service.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 1 shows normal operation; the IV curve for an array has one string, 12 modules, and a module open circuit voltage (Voc) of 30V. The inverter is tracking right at the MPP, shown here as a small yellow box. The array is at standard testing conditions with irradiance at 1000W\/meter<sup>2<\/sup>, temperature is 25\u00b0C (77\u00ba F) and the inverter is producing 1174W of power. The inverter\u2019s MPPT algorithm is performing well above 99 percent accuracy, very impressive.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6598\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smainverted.com\/files\/2014\/06\/image-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6598\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6598 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.smainverted.com\/files\/2014\/06\/image-2-262x152.png\" alt=\"Figure 2, click to enlarge.\" width=\"262\" height=\"152\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/152;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2, click to enlarge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Figure 2 shows the manipulations in the IV and power curves when we increased the simulated temperature to 50\u00b0C (122\u00b0 F), very hot and very possible in parts of the country. The MPPT moved down the IV curve to about 300V, though the actual MPP is slightly higher on the curve. The Sunny Boy has reduced the PV array\u2019s current to maintain an MPP more than the low point of the MPPT voltage window. Because of this intelligent operation, the accuracy of the MPP suffers slightly but plenty power is being produced where other inverters might shut off.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important for system designers to look at the potential for, or frequency of, heat-related low voltage power losses; these considerations can greatly impact system configuration and inverter sizing.
